PUTTY-KNIFE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1910.
Application led August 18, 1909. Serial N o. 513,487.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. COMPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton,- in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Putty-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to putty knives for use of glaziers and it has for its object to provide a putty knife of simple and improved construction in the blade of which shall be combined a plurality of tools for various purposes.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improvethe construction and operation of this class of devices.
IVith these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being however, understood` that no limitation is necessarily made to the recise structural details therein exhibited ut that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side view of a putty knife constructed 'in accordance with the lnvention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transversesectional view of the blade taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the'severalviews are denoted by like characters of reference.
The present invention constitutes an improvement on the putty knife for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me on the 27th day of July, 1909, No. 929,194.
The blade 5l of the present invention is suitably connected with a handle 6, and said blade is provided with outwardly diverging side edges 7-8 and with a front edge 9 which 1s formed approximately at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the blade.
' Upon the side edge? adjacent to the front end 9 there is formed a laterally extending V-shaped projection 10 having a cutting edge l11 adjacent to the edge 7 of the blade;
the opposite side 8 of the blade is provided with a trapezoidal recess 12, the lower edge 13 of which whereby is meant the edge most closely a jacent to the handle) is approximately parallel to and is disposed 1n approximate alinement with thecutting edge 11 ofthe member 10. Thev upper ed e 14 of the recess 12 is approximately para lel to theedge of the blade. The portion of the side edge of the blade which-connects the outer extremity of the edge 14 with the ed e 9 is disposed at right an les to both t e side edges so that a stri 'ng face 15 will be formed.
In practice the sharp pointed member 10 may be utilized as a can opener for the purpose of opening paint cans, and it also constitutes an extremely useful device for the purpose of removing old utty from frames,
window sash and the like; when utilized for the latter purpose, the lower edge 13 of the recess 12 which is approximatel parallel to and in alinement with the cutting edge 11 may be effectively struck with a hammer or similar tool ,for the purpose of facilitatv ing the removal of old putty, especially when the latter has become too old to be readily removed. The edge 9 of the blade may be utilized as a scraper and also for the purse of applying putty in the usual well own manner; andthe edge 15 constitutes a striking face which may be very effectively used for the purpose of driving glaziers points. It will thus be seen that the device constitutes a combination tool which will be found vextremely useful .and serviceable for a varietyV of purposes and it will also be seen that' the improvement is of such simplicity.
that it may be manufactured at an expense not necessarily exceeding that of an oldfashioned put-ty knife.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A utty knife including a blade provided a jacent to its outer edge with a V- shaped lateral extension and provided at its opposite edge with a recess, the lower ed e of which is approximately parallel to t e lower edge of the V-sha e extension.
2. A putty knife inc uding a blade hav ing a Vshaped lateral extension adjacent to its outer edve and provided at its o posite side edge with a trapezoidal recess; t e por- 9 at the upper or outer end tion of the side ed e between said recess and tween said recess and the outer edge of tbe the outer edge of t e blade being disposed at right angles to the latter.
3. A putty knife including a blade having divergent side edges, an outer edge disposed at right angles to the blade, and a' V shaped lateral extension adjacent to the outer edge; the o osite Side edge of the blade being providlg with a trapezoidal recess, and the portion of the si e edge beblade being disposed at right angles to the latter.
In testlmony whereof I ax my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW J. COMPTON.
