Be it known that LVALENTINE J. SCHRET TER, a resident of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pencil-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to a pencil-sharpener, and especially one which is combined with a pocket-knife, and has for its object to provide a pencil-sharpener which is adjustable for various sizes of pencils, which permits of varying the depth of cut in sharpening the pencil, and which provides for the ready removal and holding of the cutting-blade for the purpose of sharpening the same.

To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention,I will now describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure l is a view of the back of the device. Fig. 2 is a view of one sidethereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the front thereof. Fig. 4 is a view of the side opposite that disclosed in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is across-sectional view on the line 5 5, Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the bowl of the pencil-sharpener to show the adjustiugrscrews.

My improved pencil-sharpener is shown combined with a pocket-knife, and it comprises a frame 1, preferablymade of suitable cast metal, which has one side face formed fiat, as at 2, upon which rests the fiat face of the pencil-sharpener blade 3. The frame 1 has formed integrally therewith the bowl of the pencil-sharpener 4, which is provided with avertical slot 5 at its lower end adjacent to the flat face 2 of the frame, into which slot projects the cutting end of the blade 3. Projecting radially into the bowl 4 near its top are the adj USlJlDg-SCI'GWS 6 to adapt the sharpener to pencils of various sizes. On one edge of the frame 1, at the end adjacent the pencil-sharpener, is an undercut projecting lip 7 for receiving one of the beveled edges of the sharpener-blade 3, the frame on the side opposite the face 2 being provided with a lug S, which has a screw-threaded hole for receiving the screw 9, said screw serving to secure in place the clamp 10, which has an overhanging lip 11, taking over the opposite beveled edge of the sharpener-blade 3. The clamp 10 has a rearwardly-projecting lug 12, which is apertured to receive the screw 9, and 55 two legs 13, which straddle the lug 8 and lie close against the frame 1. The lug 8 is preferably formed of a separate piece having a screw extension 14 taking into a threaded aperature in the frame 1, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3; but it is obvious that said lug 8 may be formed integrally with the frame 1 or maybe secured thereto in any other suitable manner than that disclosed. Extending through the frame 1 at the forward end of the pencil-sharpener blade 3 are suitable screws 15, which bear against the inner flat face of said blade and serve to adjust the cutting end of said blade toward and from the frame 1. By this means the depth of out of said blade on the pencil may be varied as desired, while the means for clamping the blade to the frame permits its ready removal for sharpening and its adjustment forward into the bowl as it wears away. 7 3

The frame 1 on the end opposite the bowl 4 is provided on its upper edge with the laterally-projecting portion l6,having a dovetailed recess 17 in the edges thereof, said recess serving to receive a dovetailed projection 18 on the plate 19, which is provided with a stem 20, passing through an aperture in the frame 1 and havining its outer end screw-threaded to receive the nut 21. The stem 20 serves as the pivot for the knifeblades 22 23, said blades being provided on their opposing faces with suitable grooves for receiving the lateral ribs 26 27 on the lockingplate 28,placed between said blades. To open or close the blades, the nut 21 is loosened, allowing the plate 19 to move slightly to unclamp the blades, and when the latter are opened or closed, as desired, the nut 21 is again tightened, drawing the plate 19 against the blade 23 and clamping the whole firmly together, the ribs 26 27 of the locking-plate 28 being engaged by the grooves of the blades, thereby holding the latter rigidly in their open or closed position.

To conceal and protect the blades, the shell or scale 30 is suitably secured to one side of the frame 1, as by means of the rivets 31. Seated in the top of the scale 30 is a metallic plate 32, which has a threaded aperture therein for IOO - screw-driver 34, which is used to'operate the adjusting- screws 6 and 15, and when not in Y use is screwed into the plate 32 and prevented from being lost.

The undercut lip 7 and the overhanging lip 11 of the clamp 10 project sufficiently far from the face 2 to allow the blade 3 to rest on and project beyond the bowl 4, in which position the blade can be clamped to the tool and the latter used as a holder for sharpening the blade.

It will be observed that my invention provides a pencil-sharpener which is adjustable for various sizes of pencils, which permits of varying the depth of cut in sharpening the pencil, and which provides for the ready removal of the sharpener-blade for the purpose of sharpening the same. The device as a whole is neat and compact in appearance and can be manufactured at a small cost.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a pencil-sharpener a frame having a fiat face, a sharpener-bowl on one end thereof and integral therewith, said bowl having a slot adjacent to the flat face of the frame, a bladeresting on the flat face of the frame and projecting into the slot in the bowl, means for adjusting said blade toward and from the flat face on which it rests, and means for clamping the blade to the frame.

2 In a pencil-sharpener, a frame havinga fiat face, an undercut lip atone side thereof, a sharpener-bowl on one end thereof, said bowl having a slot adjacent to the fiat face of the frame, a blade resting on the flat face of the frame with one edge in the undercut lip and its cutting end projectinginto the slot of the bowl, a clamp fitting over the opposite edge of the blade, means for securing said clamp to the frame, and adjusting-screws passing through the frame and bearing against the front end of the blade.

4. In a pencilsharpener, a holder and a bowl thereon having aslotin the side thereof, radially-adjusting screws projecting into said how], a blade projecting into said bowl and secured to said holder, and means for adjusting said blade laterally andlongitndinally in the slot.

5. In a pencil-sharpener a frame having a flat face, a sharpener-bowl on one end thereof,

said bowl having a slot adjacent to the flat face of the f ame, a blade resting on the flat face of the frame and projecting into the slot in the bowl, means for adjusting said blade toward and from the flat face on which it rests, and means for clamping the blade to the frame to allow it to be projected agreater or lesser distance into the bowl.
