POCKET-KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,897, dated May 23, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, HEINRICH ScHIoKLER, of Esslingen, Viirtemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket or Pen Knives,of which the following is a f ull, clear, and exact description, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention is an improved pocket or penknife designed particularly for sharpening pencils, though adapted also for use in the same manner and for the same purposes as an ordinary pen or pocket knife.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a side View of my improved knife with the blade closed, one side being `partly broken away for purposes of illustration. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the blade open. Fig is a cross section on line of Fig. ],and Fig. Il is a cross section on line y--y of Fig. 2.

In the iigures the knife blade ZJ, is of the ordinaryI or any desired form. It is secured between the walls or sides of the knife by a suitable rivet forming the pivot thereof, and is provided with a spring for holding it open or closed in the ordinary manner. One side or wall of the knife, as at e, is formed of a straight Hat piece of metal, and to this may be secured a rounded outside ornamental covering of any desired material. The other side has formed integral therewith or secured thereto a conical shell a, having` its interior wall of approximately the size and shape of the pointed end of a pencil. This conical shell is preferably formed, as shown, integral with the wall e', and extending about half way of the length of the handle. One wall of the conical shell in the same plane with the blade of the knife is cut away as at c and the edge of the blade extends about half way across the space thus formed between the interorof the shell and the space between the walls. The outside of the conical shell may be ornamented in any desirable manner, and the portion of the handle between the shell and the pivot end of the knife covered or ornamentedV as desired and made to correspond to the other side. As before stated the edge of the knife blade extends slightly into the cut away portion c, of the shell.

To sharpen a pencil it is only necessary to insert the end into the open end of the shell until the end comes in contact with the knife edge, and then rotate either the pencil or knife, when the knife edge will act to trim or cut the end of the pencil to sharpen the same.

I claim as my invention- A pocket knife havinga conical shell formed in one side of the handle thereof the said cone having one side parallel with the handle and provided with a cut away portion, with the blade of the knife extending when closed into the cut away portion, substantially as described.
