HANDSAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,403, dated October 5, 1886.
Application tiled May S, 1886. Serial No. 201.566. (No model.) i
To all 1071.071?, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, THOMAS VAN OSTRAND,
i a citizen of the United States, and a resident of ings, which form a part of this specification,
and in which- Figure l is a view of my improved saw. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on line x as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View on line y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the handle, as shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference `indicate corresponding partsin all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of saws in which one edge is formed with teeth for ripping and the other edge with teeth set for crosscut; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a saw, having an adjustable handle which may handle sliding in the slots E, are similarly shaped and provided with nuts N. A bolt, O, lits with its polygonal head P in a countersink,
Q, in one lip of the handle, and passes through 5 5 a perforation, R, in the said lip and through the slot F in the saw-blade, and the other` lip is formed with a registering perforation hav ing a metallic lining, S,and a tubular washer,
`T, fitting within it and bearing against the 6o y edges of the slot with its inner end. A thumbnut, U, having a tubular sleeve, V, upon its inner side, fits with the said sleeve, and with its central perforation upon the screw-threaded end of the bolt having a screw-threaded bore,
and the sleeve fits within the lined perforation bearing against the outer end of the washer.
It will now be seen that when the thumbnut is loosened the blademay be rocked, turn- 7o the sleeve of the nut will bear against the outer end of the tubular washer, the inner end of which will bear against the edges of the adj usting-slot,binding the saw-blade in its adbe set at diit'erent angles with reference to the justed position.
edges of the saw-blade, allowing the handle to be adjusted conveniently tothe different classes of work to be performed by the saw, as hercinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA indicates the saw-blade, one edge, B,of which has its teeth set for ripping, while the other edge, O, has the teeth set for cross cut.
The upper end of the saw is formed with a perforation, D, at the center line ot' the saw and segmental slots, E E and F are formed in the blade concentric with. the perforation, two/of the slots being to the sides of the perforation, while the third slot, F,is placed with its middle in a line with the perforation. A bolt, G, passes through the perforation, and through perforations 'H in thelips of the handle J, which lips bear against the sides of the upper end of the saw-blade, and this bolt, which is formed with a countcrsunk head, I, at one end, has a countersunk nut, K, at its 5o threaded end, and the bolts L L, which pass through perforations M M in the lips of the It will be seen that the tubular sleeve of the 8o thumb-nut will have two functions-viz., to
bear against the washer and force the same against the blade, at the same tilne'guiding the nut and the bolt, and at the same time the sleeve will add to the threaded portion of the nut, giving it more threaded surface, and consequently giving it a firmer and more durable hold upon the screw-threaded portion of the bolt, preventing it from cutting the thread or being 'placed obliquely upon the threaded 9o portion of the bolt.
Having thus described my invention,l claim and desire to se'cure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a handsaw, the combination of a blade with it, and formed with concentric segmental slots at the sides of the perforation, a handle 10o,
having its lips formed with perforations for the admission of bolts for the perforation and boro, andiitting upon the bolt and inside of the lined perforation bearing against the Wash er, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ir;-
ni y own I have hereunto aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS VAN OS'IRAND.
