IMPROVED DEVICE FOR WEANING CALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,912, dated December 10, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. VELLING, of
Cedar Falls, in the county of Black Hawk, inl
the State of Iowa, have invented'a new and useful device or muzzle for the purpose of weaning calves and preventing cows from sucking themselves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and application of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication, in which- The figure is a perspective view representing all its parts.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and application. I make my machine or muzzle of iron, steel, or brass.
Letter F represents the main body; a a, balls at each end or opening of main body; B B B, prongs sharpened at the points attached to and standing at right angles from main body; e e, spring-standards set same as prongs; d, steel spring, the middle of which sets over the middle or lower prong B and each end under spring-standards e e; c, joint for the purpose of widening the space between the balls a in putting the muzzle on or taking it off from the animals nose.. I construct the joint by flattening or halving the ends which form the middle portion of ,the body F, as shown in the drawing at c, and fasten them together by means of a screw or rivet from the back and under middle prong B. In applying the machine or muzzle to the purpose for which it is intended the balls@ a are to be inserted one into each nostril of the animals nose with the jointed or middle part down or below the nostrils and resting on the upper lip and the prongs pointing forward from the nose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
