Description
' n 7, 1958 H. c. CARPENTER FOLDING BLADE SHEATHED NAIL SET Filed July 29, 1955 INVENTOR. HERBERT C CbRPE/VTER Arron/vs) United States Patent FOLDING BLADE SHEATHED NAIL SET Herbert Carpenter, Fresno, Calif.
Application July 29, 1955, Serial No. 525,209
Claims. (Cl. 145-46) My invention relates to putty knives, and it has for a purpose the provision of a putty knife in the handle of which are mounted variousforms of tools necessary for use in glazing, and whereby such tools are made instantly accessible for use thereby eliminating the time lost in locating or borrowing such tools as occurs'when they are separate from the putty knife.
It is also a purpose of my invention to provide a putty knife in the handle of which a nail-setting tool is mounted to occupy extended and folded positions, and when extended can be turned to be automatically locked in a position substantially at right angles to the handle so as to permit it to be readily applied at one end to a nail, leaving the other end free to be struck by a hammer for setting the nail.
I will describe only one form of putty knife having embodied in the handle thereof one set of tools for use in glazing and allied uses, each embodying my invention,
and will then point out the novel features thereof inclaims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view showing in elevation, a putty knife with a portion of the handle thereof broken away, and a nailsetting tool mounted in the handle in extended position for use, and one means of locking the tool in such position.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing two additional forms of tools mounted in the handle and in extended position for use.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the putty knife showing the several tools in folded position within the handle.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the nail-setting tool and the supporting member therefor detached one from the other, and also showing the means for locking the tool in position for use.
Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of the nail-setting tool-supporting member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my invention in its present embodiment comprises a putty knife including a handle H and a blade B fixed to one end of the handle in any suitable manner. The handle H is made up of two outer metal plates and 16 covered on their outer sides by ornamental plates 17 of metal or plastic. Between the plates 15 and 16 is an intermediate plate 18 dividing the handle into two compartments as best illustrated in Fig. 3.
By means of a transverse pin 19 which extends through all of the plates, tools 20 and 21 are mounted for pivotal movement on the handle to occupy the extended position shown in Fig. 2 or the folded position shown in Fig. 3. By means of a spring 20 between the plates 16 and 18, these tools 20 and 21 are releasably held in either extended or folded position, it being understood that when in extended position they are adapted to be used for the purposes intended.
The tool 20 is constructed to provide a bottle cap remover 22, an angularly bent terminal lip 23 which forms a ICC jar lid or paint can top remover, and a V-shaped groove 24 in the lip which forms a tack puller. The tool 21 is primarily designed for use in glazing, and rotatably mounted on one edge thereof is a glass cutting wheel 25. On its other edge, it is formed with spaced fingers 26 which are adapted for use in the separation of parts of glass after cutting'by the wheel 25. The free end of the tool 21 may be constructed to provide a screw-driver 27.
My invention also includes a nail-setting tool 28, the narrow end 29 of which is fiat to engage the head of a nail for setting the same within a wall, while the other end 30 is rounded and flattened to provide a surface which is adapted to be struck by a hammer to actuate the tool in the setting of the nail. This tool 28 is pivotally mounted on a supporting member 31 by means of a rivet 32 to occupy the extended position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, or the folded position shown in full lines in the same figure, and in which latter position, it is adapted to be used in the setting of nails.
In order that the nail-setting tool 28 may be firmly held in position for use, and yet swung to the broken line position of Fig. 1 incident to folding the member 31 and the tool into the handle H when not in use, the following means is provided. A projection 33 is formed on one edge of the member 31, against which one edge of the tool 28 abuts to define the position of the tool when in use wherein it is substantially at right angles to the handle H. A cam 34 is formed on one face of the tool 28 which rides onto the confronting face of the member 31 as the tool is swung to position for use thereby frictionally latching the tool in such position. To release the tool, it is only necessary to pull thereon so as to swing it in a direction which will cause the cam to ride off of the member 31, when the tool can be further swung about the rivet 32 back to the broken line position shown in Fig. 1.
The supporting member 31 is pivotally mounted in the handle H by the pin 19 and between the plates 15 and 18. The member 31 is held in folded or extended position with respect to the handle, by means of a spring 35 secured between the plates 15 and 18 by pins 36 and 37, the free end of the spring being squared and engaging a shoulder 31a on the member 31 to hold the latter in extended position, and engaging one edge of the member to hold it in folded position.
In glazing, not only is a putty knife at all times necessary to putty a pane of glass in a Window sash, but it frequently becomes necessary to cut the glass to fit the sash. Also, to properly finish a job, it is necessary to remove tacks, set nails and then cover the same with putty, and remove lids from paint cans, and caps from bottles containing paint-thinning liquids. By having in the handle of the putty knife the tools necessary to the performance of these operations, they are at all times instantly accessible, so as to eliminate the time lost in locating and borrowing tools.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of putty knife including various forms of tools in the handle thereof, it is to be understood that Various changes and modifications may be made in the tools and their manner of mounting in the handle, without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
