1 Claim.
This invention relates to pencil Sharpeners and it is one object of the invention to provide a tool of this character consisting of companion body members pivoted to each other for movement from extended position to folded position, one of said members carrying a blade of the type used in a safety razor and the other body member serving as a shield for a projecting portion of the blade and carrying a pencil-receiving socket into which the blade extends, the socket being so disposed that the blade has good cutting engagement with a pencil during a sharpening operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pencil sharpener which is simple in construction and so compact that it may be conveniently carried in a pocket or attached to a watch chain or key chain.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective View showing the pencil sharpener folded.
Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the opposite side thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the tool with its body members in extended position.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken transversely through the folded tool on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
This pencil sharpener has companion body members I and 2 formed of strong metal and, at one end, formed with hinge ears 3 and 4 through which a pin 5 is passed to pivotally connect the body members with each other. A head 5 is formed at one end of the pin '5 and between this head and the adjacent ear 4, the eye I of a cork screw 8 is engaged about the pin to pivotally mount the cork screw and allow movement of the cork screw from the folded position shown in Fig. 1 to the extended position for use shown in Fig. 3.
The body member 2 is formed with a longitudinally extending slot 9 in which a double edged blade II] is removably mounted, the slot being open throughout the entire length of the inner edge of the body member and, at its outer side edge, opening through the side edge of the body member for a portion of the length thereof. It will thus be seen that when the blade is inserted in the slot 9 its end portions will have abutting engagement with the outer side edge portion of the body member and for the remainder of its length have its sharpened edge I I exposed between guard fingers I2 formed along the outer side edge of the body member. Therefore, the body member 2 serves as a blade holder and, together with the blade, forms a safety razor having a removable blade.
Adjacent its free end, the body member 2 is recessed to form a hook I'3 for removing bottle caps and, at its free end, this body member is formed with a longitudinally extending tongue constituting a screw driver blade I4. A pipe cleaner I5 is pivotally mounted at one side of the inner pivoted end of the body member by a pin I6 for swinging movement from the folded position shown in Fig. 1 to extended position for use, as shown in Fig. 3, and, in order that this pipe cleaner may be releasably held in folded position, there has been provided a keeper I1 forming a socket into which the free end of the pipe cleaner is engaged, as shown in Fig. 1. Since the pipe cleaner and the cork screw are pivotally mounted at the inner end of the body member I from a folded position to extended position for use and the two handle members extend in abutting end to end engagement with each other when in extended position, the body members serve to form a handle of the cross bar type adapted to be easily grasped in a person's hand when using the cork screw or the pipe cleaner.
The body member I is also formed with a slot l8 extending its full length and opening through its inner side edge so that when this body member is closed it serves as a shield for the portion of the blade which projects transversely from the inner edge of the body member 2 and fits into the slot I8, as shown in Fig. 4. When the body member I is in the folded position, the sharpened side edge I9 of the blade extends into a pocket 20 carried by the body member and partially across a side opening or slot 2| formed in one side of the pocket and extending longitudinally thereof at the junction of the pocket with the body member. The Pocket tapers longitudinally from its open end so that a pencil may be thrust into the same for engagement with the sharpened edge I9 of the blade, and it will be readily understood that when the pencil is turned in the pocket, Wood will be shaved from the pencil and pass out through the side opening during sharpening of the pencil. It should also be noted that the blade extends across alined openings 22 formed in the body member I in spaced relation to the free end thereof. By passing the end of a cigar through these openings with the body member I swung away from the body member 2 and then applying pressure to force the body member I toward the body member 2, the blade will serve very carried by inner side portions of inner ends of,
said members with the ears of onelmember extending diagonally therefrom and the ears of the other body member extending longitudinally therefrom and fitting between the arms of the first body member, a pin passing through said ears and pivotally mounting said membersior movement from an extended position in end to relation to each other to a folded position disposing their inner side edges in confronting felat'ion to each other, said body members having longitudinally extending slots opening" through their inner side edges and registering when the members are folded, a pencil receiving socket formed integral with and extending longitudinally of the outer side edge of one body member and being open at one end and tapered towards its other end, said socket being laterally ofiset to project from one side of the body member carrying the socket and at its other side being formedwith a longitudinally extending side opening constituting an outlet for shavings, the slot of the body member carrying the socket communicating with the socket along the side thereof formed with the side opening, and a blade removably mounted in the slot of the other body member with a side portion extending from the inner side edge thereof for fitting into the slot or the first body member with a sharpened side edge extending into the socket along the side in overlapping relation thereto for cutti 'g a'genient with a pencil'thrust into the soclit and tni ne'd.
