The present invention relates to improvements in cutlery and has reference more particularly to a tang construction.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide an implement that is formed with a handle receiving tang at one end, the tang being of such construction as to afford maximum strength to the blade and eliminate points of critical weakness which result from sharp changes in section, and further eliminating any possibility of the tang breaking, the tang at the same time obviating the necessity of having to employ additional reinforcing means for the handle.
A further object is to provide a knife tang wherein the same will be of balanced proportion thus distributing the stress entirely throughout the tang and strengthening the blade of the implement itself.
A further object resides in the provision of a knife tang wherein the same is formed with a means for positively securing a bolster thereon at the juncture of the tang with the blade.
Another important object is to provide a tang construction which is simple, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted for the purposes for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanyin drawings.
In the accompanying rawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a knife blade formed at one end with my improved tang, and showing the bolster sol dered on the tang at its juncture with the blade,
Figure 2 is a similar view without the bolster and more clearly illustrating the cut out portion for receiving the solder or other fastening means provided for the bolster, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the tang taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a knife blade, the same being formed at its rear end with my improved tang that is denoted generally by the numeral 2. The tang is of uniform thickness throughout its length and the forward end portion 3 is of greater width than the rear end portion 4, the longitudinal edges of the tang being knurled or serrated as indicated at 5, to provide a means for positively securing the tang within a suitable socket provided therefor in the handle shown in the dotted lines in Figure 1.
The enlarged forward end portion 3 of the tang is preferably twice as wide as the rear end portion 4; and the purpose thereof is 'to distribute the strength evenly thus eliminating possibility of the tang becoming broken. The enlarged forward end portion 3 of the tang is formed with a substantially circular cut-out portion 6 and extending in diverging relation from the rear side of this cutout portion are the slightly curved channels 7 and 8, respectively. The purpose of the cutout portion 6 and the communicating channels 7 and 8 will be hereinafter more fully described.
Adapted to be secured on the tang 2 at its juncture with the blade 1 is the bolster 9, and this bolster is rigidly secured in position through the medium of solder or any like material that builds up the cut-out portion 6 as well as the channels 7 and 8 as indicated more clearly in Figure 1. The solder is represented at 10.
The rear face of the bolster is of such construction that its shape corresponds exactly to the shape of theforward end of the handle that is secured on the tang 2, thus eliminating the necessity of machining in order to make the two surfaces correspond exactly when the handle is assembled on the tang. The outer surface of the bolster is of such shape as to form a continuation of the outer surface of the handle in which the tang is secured thus obviating the necessity of having to machine or grind the bolster or the handle to make the outer surfaces thereof continuous or flush with each other.
