uNiTian COMBINATION KNIFE AND SAIV'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Knife and Saw, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cutting devices and more particularly to a combination knife and saw and the primary object is to provide a knife adapted for use in connection with a cutting block, the knife being suspended in a manner that will permit it to be reciprocated' or raised and lowered as desired.
Other objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of thefollowing detail description and accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device constructed in accordance with my invention, and a Fig. 2 i an end elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the base block 1 is of substantially rectangular form and of any desired thickness. Arranged near one end of the base 1 and ex tending upwardly therefrom is a hanger which consists of the parallel uprights 2 and 3 the lower ends of which are extended through openings formed in the base block. Recesses 1 in the bottom of the base block communicate with the openings for the standards so that fastening nuts 5 may be screw threadedly mounted on the lower ends of the standards to secure them in position. The top of the block is engaged by nuts 6 carried by the standards 2 and 3 directly adjacent the block so that the desired adjustment may be obtained when the standards 2 and 3 are raised and lowered. The upper ends of the standards as shown to advantage in Fig. 2 are curved inwardly toward each other to provide substantially U-shaped inverted brackets 7, the meeting ends of which are provided with openings to receive a pivot bolt 8. Mounted upon the pivot bolt 8 is a hanger rod 9 which is provided with two screw threaded rod sections connected together by a turn buckle 10. The lower section is provided with a bifurcated end adapted to be pivotally connected as indicated at 12 to one end of the cutting knife 13. The cutting knife is provided with a cutting edge 14 and a saw edge 15 so that the knife Specification of Letters Patent.

may be employed for both chopping, cutting and sawing. The knife at the end opposite to the pivoted portion is provided with a handle member which may be gripped by the operator to permit proper manipulation of the knife when it is in use. it will he notes from this construction that the knife may be raised and lowered and also may be reciprocated longitudinally with respect to the block to accomplish the cutting of any material placed upon the block beneath the knife.
To prevent reciprocation of the knife when it is used as a chopping member, a latch 16 is provided which consists of a bar pivotally connected to one of the upright members as indicated at 17 and adapted to be releasably connected to the other upright member .as shown in Fig. 2. This bar, will engage the hanger rod 9 so that sliding movement of the knife will be prevented but will not prohibit the knife from being raised and lowered when chopping.
Minor changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the character described,
'a base block. upright standards mounted at one end of the base block and having their upper terminals provided with inverted U- shaped bracket members, the ends of the said bracket members being arranged in close proximity, a pivot member carried by the said meeting ends of the bracket members, a hanger rod suspended from the said pivot member, and a cutting element carried by the lower end of the said hanger rod and dapted to extend across the surface of the said block.
2. In a device of the character described, a base block, a supporting member mounted at one end of the base block and including spaced uprights, the upper ends of the said uprights being curved toward each other to provide brackets, the meeting ends of the brackets being disposed centrally with re spect to the space between the said upright members, a suspension hanger, means to pivotally connect the said hanger to the meeting ends of the said brackets, and a cutting knife connected to the lower end of the hanger.
3. In a device of the character described, a base block, a supporting member mounted at one end of the base block and including spaced uprights, the upper ends of the said uprights being curved toward each other to provide brackets, the meeting ends of the brackets being disposed centrally with respect to the space between the said upright members, a suspension hanger, means to pivotally connect the said hanger to the meeting ends of the said brackets, and a cutting knife connected to the lower end of the hanger, the said cutting knife being adapted to extend parallel with respect to the flat surface of the said block and means carried by the upright members to be disposed in a position for engaging the said suspension 15 hanger whereby swinging movement of the latter will be prevented.
In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
