OOIBIHLTION INSTBUMIRI'I.
To all whom it may concern..-
' vide an instrument of that character where--.
Be it known that I, KAEMON Kunosn, a
of in tubular extension member 12; the latter citizen of Japan, and resident of the city Seattle, county of King, State of Waslnng- .ton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination instruments, and more particularly to an instrument comprising a knife, pen and pencil, which may selectively be extended to functionalposition; the principal object of the invention being to proin the body, or handle ortion, serves as a mounting and as a-sheat for a knife blade, contains ma azines for the storage of leads for the pencil and has a tubular expandible extension aflixed thereto wherein a pen and pencil holding head is reversibly mounted and whereon a sleeve is slidably mounted to effect tightening of the sleeve against the head to retain the pen or pencil in position for writing.
Inaecomplishing the objects of the invention, I have provided the improved de:
tails of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side view of a combination instrument constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. 3 shows in perspective the different parts of the device in a disassembled relation.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the handle of the device, showing the lead storing channels.
. Referring more in detail to the draw- 1ngs- 1 designates what I term as the handle portion of the instrument. Ifhis comprises two semi-cylindrical side members 2 and 3 which are spaced apart by a 'spring 4 and are bound together by the usual rivets 5 which retain the spring in functional position.
Pivotally mounted between the plates 2 and 3 at the outer end of the handle by means of a rivet 6, is a blade 7 having the usual offset shoulder 8 for engagement with the end of the spring to hold the blade properly in place.
Specification of Il e'tters Patent. v
Application flied August 12, 1920. Serial No. 403,037.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
At the inner end of the handle is a socket 10 and threaded thereinto is the neck 11 of mounted in the slit end of the tube is a cylindrical head 15 which at oneend has a pen point 16 mounted thereon and at its opposite end has a threaded neck 17 whereon the mteriorly threaded end ofa tapered sleeve 18 is mounted; the sleeve having an opening 19 at its point wherethrough a lead 20 may be projected for writing. The lead is adjustably held within the sleeve between two blocks 21 and 21' which at their inner ends engage the end of the neck 17 and at then opplosite ends are wedged within the end of t e sleeve against the lead to grip and hold it in any adjusted position. v
A sleeve 22 incloses and extends beyond the pencil 'end of the head 15 and has stops 23 thereon which engage the end of the tube 1112 so limit the inward movement of the A collar 24 is slidably mounted about the tubular extension member 12 which may be adjusted downwardly over the slit endto tighten the tube against the head 15 to hold the pen or pencil pointsproperly for writing, or. it may be adjustedupwardly to release the head so that it may be reversed to change the writing instruments. It will be noted that one of the writing instruments is inclosed-within the tube while the other is in use.
Channels 25 are formed longitudinally within the side members of the handle from the inner ends thereof which may serve as magazines wherein leads for the pencil may be stored, these being closed by the extension 12-when it is threaded onto the handle.
It is apparent that by adjustment of the sleeve 18 outwardly, the blocks 21 and 21 may be loosened from the lead and the latter may be adjusted into or from the opening 19, also that by sliding the collar 24 toward the upper end of the handle, the head 15 will be loosened in its mounting and may be reversed.
The handle may also be equipped with a clip as shown at 26 for fastening the device {0 the wall of a pocket to prevent its being Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is-.-'
1. An instrument of the character described comprising a handle portion provided with a socket at one end, a tubular extension provided at one end with a neck that is threaded into said socket, and having a longitudinal slit extending from its opposite end, a head, having writing instruments at it opposite ends, reversibly mounted in said tube to permit one of said instruments to extend therefrom to functional position, and a collar adjustable on the slit end of the tube to tighten the latter against the head to retain tie writing instrument in place.
2. An instrument of the character described comprising a handle rtion having channels extending longitu inally therein and openin to the inner end thereof, wherein writing eads may be stored, and having a socket at its inner end, a tubular extension member having a neck; at one end threaded into' said socket so that said extension closes said lead storage channels, said tube having a slit extending longitudinally therein from its outer end, a head mounted in the slit end of. the tube having a lead carrying extension thereon wherefrom the end of a lead may be extended to writing position, and a collar adjustable on said tube to tighten the latter against the head to retain the latter in place.
3. An instrument of the character described comprising a cylindrical handleportion, a blade pivotally mounted within the handle, a resilient member carried by the handle and arranged to hold the bladein open or closed osition, a plurality of lead storage channe s extending longitudinally in said handle and opening at the inner end thereof, a tubular extension threaded onto the handle to close the channels, and having a longitudinally extending slit at its opposite end, a head reversibly mounted in the slit end of said extension, having a pen point mounted at one end thereof and a lead carrying magazine at its opposite end wherefrom lead may be ad'usted to writing position and a .collar slldable on the tube to tighten the same against the lead to hold the writing instruments in osition.
Signed at Seattle, ashington, this 6th day of August, 1920.
